Before we start please some further information.
My name is Jay Hilgert, and I'm 25 yrs old. I'm a Graphic /Web Designer from the USA, and I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Oklahoma State University. I started BittBox.com in January, 2007. Let`s Start ! Why is the name of your blog BittBox !
I chose BittBox because I wanted a memorable name, but a name that also meant something. My blog is filled with tips, tutorials and free source files. These would be the "Bitts." And the "Box" part would be the container for those bitts, the website itself, hence "BittBox" was born.
Describe your blog!
BittBox is a niche blog and is geared toward working designers, aspiring designers, and people that are making an effort to learn about design. You will find lots of free source files, detailed tutorials, tips and hints, and the occasional rant or news post.
Which category would you choose for your blog?
Graphic Design, with an emphasis on Illustrator, Vector Graphics, and Web related design.
Why did you start blogging and what do you want to achieve with this blog?
I started BittBox as a hobby, and my intentions were very simple. I wanted to give away high quality source files, that were not only usable by a wide audience, but also serve as a learning tool for those not already neck deep in design. I believe the best way to learn is getting your hands on the actual source to pick apart and dissect, and my readers seem to be grateful. I like to accompany my free source files with tutorials, so everyone that needs it can follow along and see how they were made. This seems to work, because an advanced user can just skip the tutorial and use the free files as time savers, while less experienced readers can not only read, about how to do it, they can see it in front of them. As a higher goal, I hope to not only educate, but inspire people to explore and create on their from what they learn on my blog.
What is your motivation to continue blogging?
Well, it's fun! I love my profession so much that I like to design even in my spare time. I realized that I could be helping a lot of people at the same time, and so I decided to kill two birds with one stone, and it has been a great ride so far. It's extremely rewarding to get an email from someone halfway across the planet, telling you how much you helped them learn, or how much time you saved them. Or how excited they are about wanting to learn more. The more my readers seem to learn, the more questions they have, and that is a very good thing. People getting excited about things I love to do anyway, makes me think I chose the right career path, and blogging is my way of designing things I'm interested in, without having to have a client that needs it, just people willing to learn.
What experience did you made with your blog(reactions from reader) ?
So far I've had nothing but positive feedback. And since this is the case, I'm going to try not to change anything. I'm gonna keep designing, and sharing, like I always have been.
What kind of people read your blog and who should read it?
Like I said earlier, BittBox is a very design related blog, so I would imagine that everyone from professional designers, to design noobs would stop by, if not for a tutorial, at least for a freebie or two. If you are interested in Graphic Design and/or Web Design, I would definitely stop by for a peek. If you are a professional designer, some of my files might save you some time.
Where do you get your inspiration from to write?
I'm glad you asked. I get my inspiration from my utter disappointment in the preparedness I received for web design in college. I would say that 99% of the web design knowledge I have gathered over the years is self taught, by scouring the web for tutorials and such. I'm trying to make the scouring part easier, and take my readers strait to the good stuff, that they can learn from even more quickly than I had to.
Which of your blog posts is the most valueable for your readers and why?
I would have to go with my "50 Free Vector Grunge Corners" post. Grunge will never go away, and is an important part of a designers arsenal. Vector grunge, however, is very hard to come by, and If I had to pick one of my free source files, and only one. That is what I would choose.
Would you like to interview someone? Whom?
I would probably suck at interviewing. I'll stick to design for now! If this interview could be read by millions of people, what would you want to tell them? Don't choose a career for money, or to make your parents happy. Choose a career because it's the career that will make YOU happy.
