pinoyinvestmentbankerI am Cesar Magnaye, 55, from Metro Manila, Philippines. I do consulting work now for the Philippine National Bank (PNB), which owns 100% the investment bank--PNB Capital and InvestmentCorporation-- where I previously held a position as Vice Pesident before taking early retirement in January 2002. Actually, it's a return of sorts because before I moved to the investment bank, I was VP for corporate planning at the mother bank. Before my banking career, I was an economist at the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), the country's central planning agency for almost seven years, working on ASEAN economic policy matters.
Euripidis: Why did you start blogging?

pinoyinvestmentbanker: My blogging journey is chronicled in the first four posts in my investmentbanker blog, but briefly, I stumbled upon blogging quite serendipitously--a series of seemingly unrelated events in my life in 2006, which I love to call as "dots", which "connected" and led me to the blogosphere. I hestitated at first because of the time demanded by such an activity for a busy man like me, and my self-doubt about the kind of writing that blogging required. I'm used to writing technical reports, memoranda and all that, but I thought that the writing style needed for casual blogging was something else. Anyway, I took the plunge so here I am. As a post script to what I just said, maybe I should add that what I should have really worried about, instead of the writing part, was the technical aspects of blogging--such as knowledge of HTML, and all that esoteric IT thing--for which I was not prepared at all. But then again, it's a good thing I was blindsided on that, because if I knew beforehand that sort of aggravation in my early blogging days, I wouldn't be here blogging at all. LOL!

Euripidis: The top 3 blogs you read?

pinoyinvestmentbanker: I love a number of blogs for different reasons. As a person, I have eclectic interests that manifests also in the range of blogs that I read. "The All Nighter" by i-banking monkey is an investment banker blog I love to read because of its humor--just the right dose to get me entertained. "The Wrong Advices" is another favorite of mine. That title is actually a misnomer, and I think I have commented about it to Dan, the author, because he actually gives all the right advices to bloggers. Since I am not a techie guy, Dan's blog is surely my candle in the dark. Another on my blogroll is "It's a Wonderful Life" by Sathe923, a Pinay blogger working in Singapore. She blogs candidly about her feelings about life, work, friends, family, etc. Her blog provides balance to the other blogs I read as well as the blogs that I write myself.

Euripidis: The top 3 post you write?

pinoyinvestmentbanker: That question is as difficult as answering, "Who among your children is your favorite?" All my posts are labor of love, but since I can only cite three, then fine. I wrote a serial post about "My Life As An Investment Banker" as my response to what I felt was a gap in available material in the Web from practicing investment bankers based on the Google searches that found their way to my blog and my own appreciation of the other sites I've been to on the Web. Another serial post that I wrote in response to my analysis of a supply gap on the Web was "Is Investment Banking Calling You?" To make it three, maybe I can cite "The Playlists Of Our Lives" which I wrote back in December 2006 when I was just starting to blog. My friends commented favorably on that and it also typified the kind of topics that I originally wanted to write about (see the title of my blog)--those which were not work related but profound and slightly philosophical. Of course, as I went along I found out that if my blogging has to be relevant to my readership, I had to change direction a little bit.

Euripidis: Where do you get your inspiration from to write?

pinoyinvestmentbanker: Everything I write about are either from my own experience in work, relationships (family and friends), and topics of interest, or curiousity, as the case maybe, that I read or research about.

Euripidis: Choose one word to describe your blog?

pinoyinvestmentbanker: Educational.
