Skitzzo & Jcook - SEOrefugee

Peopleized by: Euripidis - Thursday, 08 January 2009
studioJMCSkitz and I are a father son blogging team. We run the SEOrefugee and blog together. He's the SEO (search engine optimizer) and I'm an artist and web developer. He's in his early 20s, I'm north of 50.
The SEOrefugee blog is devoted to online marketing and related fields. It's a bit unique because of skitzzos offbeat attitude and the fact that we occasionally include one of my cartoons.

Why did you start blogging?

skitzzo: It was an easy and quick way to create and organize content. Plus I love an audience.
jcook: It was an easy way to promote the SEOrefugee website. After I got into it, I decided to create TOONrefugee to promote my cartoons.

Your motivation to continue blogging is? What do you wanna achieve?

skitzzo: Increase readership and the site's profile in the SEO industry.
jcook: Ditto

How did you get the idea to work together?

skitzzo: My design and technical skills aren't all that great. His promotional and marketing skills aren't exactly top notch... it just seemed natural. Plus he has trouble saying no to me.
jcook: For some reason, I can't say no when he starts a sentence with, "Hey Pops, I've got an idea." Unfortunately, he has a lot of ideas. And he's actually a lot of fun to work with.

What kind of  experience did you made with your blog (reactions   from readers...) and which where your acmes?

jcook: We had a lot of success at SEOrefugee with Digg before the whole anti-SEO crowd there put us on the blacklist. Still it was nice to see the site stats jump. Now we're having prettty good luck with traffic from StumbleUpon and Del.icio.us and, frankly, it's a bit more focused on our topic. It's nice when people recognize something you've written as worthwhile.

Does a special kind of reader read your blog and who should read  it?

skitzzo: Probably all of our readers are special.
jcook: Anyone interested in online marketing or just hanging around online with a great group of people should visit SEOrefugee.

There are so many bloggers out there who would like to optimize their pages for more traffic. Tell them 3 basic-to-do's!

skitzzo: 1. Write more. The more content you have, the more terms you'll rank for. 2. Use text links. Search engines don't like image links and won't find all your great content from step 1 if you don't give them text links to follow. 3. Visit SEO Refugee's Forums and read as much as you can.
jcook: 1. Post often 2. Be interesting 3. Be a bit outrageous

Your alexa rang is amazing! You are currently at 7.406! How did you do this? And what should the "normal" blogger notice about alexa ranking.

skitzzo: Alexa ranking is skewed towards tech related sites. We just have a site that falls into that catagory. It's really not all that impressive.
jcook: That's his area.

How meaningful is the alexa rang? I mean not everybody use the alexa toolbar so its very difficult to count and compare the traffic, isn't it?

skitzzo: Yeah, Alexa is pretty much useless.
jcook: If he says so.

Would you like to interview someone? Whom?

skitzzo: Matt Cutts - He'd have a lot of explaining to do... not to mention that whole whip thing.
jcook: Barack Obama. I realize he has nothing to do with our blog but I'd think of something to ask. After that, I'd just like to chat with the guy.

If this interview could be read by millions of people, what would you want to tell them?

skitzzo: Link to us!
jcook: Each send me a dollar.
